Right on Schedule
The historical forces at work render much of the conservative/liberal dichotomy irrelevant. We are about to be engulfed as a society in such a way as to force us all to deal with each other as humans, not ideologues.
In the US historical cycle, about every 70-90 years (about a human lifespan), the country the society runs aground on a huge crisis. It usually involves a societal breakdown of some sort. We are right on track for one. WE have survived the previous ones. The crisis usually resolves (after many years) into a rebuilding, a decay, a crisis, a resolution, and so on.
1776, 1860, 1930. We are due for one. We are in one now, but it has just begun.
I sense that it is not just this administration. Our society has run the course of its latest cycle of rebuilding. We have been in the decay cycle for 20 years, we are about to hit bottom.
I think the Bush admin is symptomatic of our overall societal decay. They should rightly be reviled, but the problems run deeper than that.
We are most likely headed into a crisis that will equal the above mentioned Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Depression/WWII. American society will once again be transformed from top to bottom. We may not make it, there are no guarantees. I repeat, in my view, it is just beginning. We are right on schedule. I remain cautiously optimistic, and I hope to live through this. We'll likely need a Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln or Roosevelt to get through this. Who will that be?
Murtha is smart enough to know that the Presidency is not his to seek. But damm, I would love to see someone of his caliber in there. Someone who doesn't bullshit themselves too much, like the rest of 'em.
And what happened to Kucinich? Do they have blackmail pictures on that guy? WE NEED A FIREBREATHER!
Murtha is the kind of guy I am sure I would disagree with on many points, but I respect the man's guts and perspective. This is the kind of guy that good military training produces. I've watched several of his press conferences, and I think in the last few years, he is one of the few visible people in govt who could be called a hero, or courageous. And you know what? He'd pooh-pooh the heroism, and point out that all he did was tell the truth.
Sheesh. We are in a bad way.
